I'll have all the materials and an icon panel ready to paint for each student. I'll share all my experience and give you the tips on making your icon a work of spirit as well as a piece of fine art.
We'll go step by step from an already tranferred drawing on your panel to a monochromatic rendering that sets up the lights and darks. We'll put gold leaf on the background and then paint the jewel tones on all the fabric. The details will go on last along with a varnish that keeps your icon looking good for years.
We will use gold leaf and add the radient metal to our icons. I'll provide the materials and step by step instruction to help you. This will give your panel that authentic Byzantine look and surface.
We will mix egg yolk, vinegar and powdered pigments that come from the earth to make a variety of the colors we use, just like the icon writers from throughout the centuries.
While one afternoon will be spent on learning to draw Christ in the Byzantine style, I will have a panel already prepared with a drawing for each student. My experience has taught me that this preliminary step insures the class is a success, allowing for most of the time spent on gilding and  painting. With the process I've developed and the time allotted we can all make a beautiful image while experiencing the meditative life that goes along with these sacred creations.
As a participant you will have your own space and your own panel to slowly bring to life. From a line drawing to a fully rendered and gilded egg tempera painting, your icons will be created just like the icons you see in churches and monasteries. You will be able to have it consecrated by keeping in an Orthodox Church and place it in your home alter to function just like the other icons you may already own. This one, however will be so very personal and special.

Please register today. The class size is limited to around 20 students. Participation is first come, first serve.
